Florida LBM locations have been involved in nearly as many acquisitions and greenfield openings so far this year as Texas, California, and North Carolina combined, Webb Analytics' Deals Database shows. The 41 facilities acquired and 18 stores opened in the Sunshine State account for nearly 17% of the 353 deals and greenfields.

Florida's 2023 showing contrasts with 2022, when it was the third most active state, and 2021, when it was fourth. Texas was the leader both of those years, with 68 deals and openings last year and 101 the year before. But so far this year, Texas has had only 11 locations acquired and 12 that opened. North Carolina has had just 21 combined deals and openings this year, while California has had only 18 deals.

The national map shows 217 facilities acquired, 136 that already have or will open as greenfields this year, and 12 closures. A total of 47 buyers have made 55 deals. There were 18 more deals announced by this time last year, but their purchases landed only 184 yards.

Drywall operations were the most popular type of dealer involved in Florida action, accounting for 34 of the 59 changes. The biggest transaction in the state--indeed, the nation--was US LBM's sale of its drywall units to L&W Supply, the gypsum specialty unit of ABC Supply. Twenty-six of those locations were in Florida. Another eight Florida locations changed hands when a major gypsum dealer, Foundation Building Materials, bought MarJam Supply. That deal encompassed 32 locations nationally.

There have been nine exterior/roofing specialty locations in Florida that have been bought or opened so far this year, along with five hardware stores, three component manufacturers, and two stores each in the flooring, landscaping, metal, and lumber categories.

Among recent actions across the country:

* 84 Lumber returned to Morgantown, WV, with a new facility.

* Koopman Lumber opened a new lumberyard in Dennis MA.

* Ambassador Supply purchased Straight Line Metal Buildings of Brookshire, TX.

* Beacon Building Products opened stores in Orlando and Clearwater, FL;, West Lebanon, NH; and Elyria, OH. Beacon's Dealers Choice Distribution opened a new store, sharing Beacon's facility in Roanoke, VA.

* L&W Supply bought Killingly Building Products of Dayville, CT, and Providence, RI.

* SiteOne Landscape Supply purchased Link Outdoor Lighting, with stores in Altamonte Springs and Naples, FL; Nashville, TN; and Houston, TX.

* Exterior specialist Gulfeagle Supply opened a store in Sharonville, OH.

* Outdoor Living Supply bought Stoneworld, a landscaping dealer in Mapleton and Ogden, UT, as well as Rexburg, ID.
