The contents of this spring's M&A map for construction supply matter as much for what the purchases represent as they do for what was bought. The completion of QXO's acquisition of Kodiak Building Partners puts it deep into lumber, components, windows and doors, and steel. Meanwhile, SRS Distribution's purchase of Mingledorff's puts The Home Depot subsidiary into HVAC for the first time.

So far this year, a total of 268 locations have been acquired in 27 deals by 19 buyers, Webb Analytics' database shows. At the same time, several dozen companies have opened, or plan to open later this year, a total of 84 greenfield locations.

QXO's agreement to buy Kodiak's 114 locations have been known since February, but the deal wasn't concluded until an April 1 announcement. With Kodiak, QXO will make money from more than roofing.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks SRS Distribution has made two big deals: the 41-unit Mingledorff's purchase as well as the acquisition of 19 Reinders outdoor living stores by SRS' Heritage Landscape Supply. SRS started as a roofing distributor. It has had a robust landscape supply business for years, along with a pool supply branch, but it hasn't gone into HVAC before now.

In other recent action:

  • Mead Lumber expanded again in Oklahoma by purchasing OHC Supply and Guthrie's Ace Hardware, both units of Oklahoma Home Centers and both based in Guthrie, OK.

  • Decks & Docks opened new stores in Huntsville, AL, and Louisville, KY.

  • Mill Creek Lumber bought Tulsa Fireplace Supply of Broken Arrow, OK.

  • Niemann Foods bought the three remaining Jerry's Hardware & Rental stores in Bloomington, Eden Prairie, and Edina, MN.

  • David and LIz Gast bought Village Pro Hardware in Lakeside Marblehead, OH, tom David's uncle, John Starcher.
