Three LBM operations sold in fast-growing South Carolina and nearby Georgia highlight a recent flurry in lumberyard deals, even as most attention is on QXO's purchase of insulation installer and dealer TopBuild.
The first announcement was from Carter Lumber, which said May 4 it bought Gaster Lumber of Savannah and Bloomingdale, GA, and Hardeeville, SC. Later that day, The Building Center announced it acquired Willingham & Sons Building Supply of Newberry, SC. And Webb Analytics has confirmed that US LBM is buying Builders Supply of Lancaster, SC.
In other regions, rk Miles bought Varney & Smith Lumber in Lisbon, NH; RoMac Building Supply took over Residential Building Supply in DeBary, FL; and EquipmentShare's Forge & Build subsidiary acquired White Creek Lumber & Hardware in Cedar Springs, MI.
Through May 7, Webb Analytics' Deals Database has noted 40 transactions by 26 different buyers involving 729 locations across North America. Roughly 60% of those locations are part of QXO's purchase of TopBuild. There also have been 98 facilities that have opened already or are slated to open later this year.
Several of the latest purchases furthered buyers' long-term strategies. For instance, with the purchase of Builders Supply of South Carolina, US LBM gets an operation south of Charlotte that complements its Professional Builders Supply unit north of the Queen City. Builders Supply also has a rail siding and does some manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Carter Lumber's takeover of Gaster Lumber expands its presence east from Atlanta and makes it possible for the company to seve builders from Hilton Head, SC, to northern Florida.
QXO's purchase of TopBuild might seem strange given that neither of its two previous acquisitions, Beacon Building Products and Kodiak Building Partners, were involved in insulation or installation. But QXO sees particular worth in TopBuild because its installers can find work in the huge construction boom under way for data centers. Installation also is a fast-growing service for building material dealers.
